Starting a Brewery, Advice From Brewery Owner Ron Adams

Starting a brewery can be overwhelming. With all the different articles telling you what's most important, how do you really know?

I spoke with the owner of Prohibition Brewing in Vista, Ron Adams, to get some insider tips and advice on the matter from someone who's actually done it. It would be impossible to cover everything that goes into starting a brewery. Lucky for you, we did cover some of the important steps. So let's dive right in.

Important steps to starting a brewery

Location, location, location! According to Adams and an article from Beverage Industry Magazine, picking your new brewery's location is one of the most important first steps. Finding a location with the proper use permits can be extremely beneficial. For example, Adams recently opened a second Prohibition Brewing in Fallbrook, where another brewery (Fallbrook Brewing) used to be.

Once you've found your location, obtaining the correct licenses at the city, federal, and state levels come next (and yes, you need to get them in that order). These take time and don't forget about insurance, tax bonds, and permits.

Next is deciding what equipment you need, and how to acquire it. This will come easier if you start small. Bigger setups cost a lot of money. So, unless you're getting financing, you better have saved enough money to keep you sustained for at least a few months. Adams recommends a 3-barrel system for first-time brewery owners. Other important steps include operating costs, basic operations, and advertising.

Need more help? Adams suggests finding resources through the Craft Brewers Association. Their site lists upcoming brewery conferences including one this month in San Diego. Adams also recommends reaching out to your local small brewery owners to obtain more information on the lengthy process from someone who's been there.

See, so much goes into starting a brewery and "we're only barely scratching the surface"- Ron Adams

With that said, we hope these first important steps give you an idea of where to begin. Until then, read an inspirational local brewer story or educate yourself on the brewing processGood luck and cheers!
